History of Georgia

Ancient Georgia

Georgia's history dates back to ancient times. The kingdoms of Colchis and Iberia were among the first states established in the region, with Colchis famously featured in Greek mythology as the destination of the Argonauts.

Medieval Period

The medieval period saw the unification of Georgia under the Bagrationi dynasty. The kingdom reached its zenith during the reign of Queen Tamar in the 12th-13th centuries, known as the Georgian Golden Age.

Modern Era

After periods of Persian and Russian rule, Georgia declared independence in 1918. However, it was soon incorporated into the Soviet Union. Georgia regained its independence in 1991 and has since been developing as a modern, democratic nation.
